Save the date for an "Evening of Great Food & Cool Jazz" featuring the Chaille Percival Quartet.  On Thursday, June 10, from 7 - 10pm at Kay n' Dave's Cantina, the public is invited to enjoy a few hours of great entertainment, while supporting a great cause:  Culver City's Parks and Playgrounds.  Just mention Culver City Great Parks Association and 20% of your bill will be donated towards CCGP's ongoing mission to improve the beauty and function of Culver City's parks.  Children are welcome.

WHY IS VET'S PLAYGROUND FENCED OFF?

You may have noticed a fence surrounding the new playground at Veterans' Park.  The slide turned out to have a defective part, and was replaced.  This required the pouring of concrete, which needs to set for a few days before it is cleared for play.  The playground should re-open in the middle of the week.

CULVER CITY PARKS HOLIDAY SCHEDULE

The following is a schedule of openings and closings for the PRCS Department over the course of the New Year’s holiday.

Parks:

  • All regularly staffed parks will be staffed from 12pm to 5pm on January 1st, 2nd & 3rd.  This includes the Skate Park.

Vets Building & Teen Center:

  • The Vets Building & Teen Center will close after Day Camp on the December 31st and remain closed until Sunday, January 3rd. 

Senior Center:

  • The Senior Center will be open from 12pm to 4pm on January 1st, 2nd & 3rd.

Plunge:

  • The Plunge will be open December 31st and January 1st from 6am to 3pm.  On January 2nd they will open from 7am to 2pm and on January 3rd from 12:15pm to 2pm.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE AT VETERAN'S PARK

KaBOOM!

Only adults could participate (because of obvious liability issues), but much of our efforts in Veterans' Park were for kids... and moms... and dads... and, well, everyone.  Around 200 community members, city staff & employees of the Wasserman Media Group pitched in and got dirty.  During an amazing day, a playground was built, hundreds of square feet of garden was planted, picnic tables were refurbished and repainted, cubby holes were built for the teen center, a permanent bicycle rack was installed, the softball backstops were painted, and a mural was painted!  Wow, did I say it was a busy day?  
 
Thanks to the folks at KaBOOM! and the Wasserman Foundation, Culver City was given a grant to do a lot of much needed work to its busiest park.  What a perfect example of the private sector, a city, and its residents collaborating to fulfill a dream.  Culver City Great Parks Association played a vital role in participating in the grant request process, recruiting community members to participate, and ultimately getting our hands dirty - AND REVELING IN IT!
 
The playground will open for jumping, climbing, sliding, dangling and just plain having fun by Monday, December 7.  Thanks to Culver City Great Parks member, Holly Port, for the amazing pictures.  Enjoy!

FOX HILLS PARK

URBAN TRAILBLAZING   

Sorry, Fox Hills Neighborhood, the secret is out.  Nestled amongst the condos and businesses of Fox Hills is an urban oasis.  I just checked it out and was amazed.  Tennis courts, paddle tennis courts, softball, picnic areas, and a .47 mile nature trail!  My only question is, why couldn't they find another three one hundredths of a mile to round it off to an even half mile?

WHAT'S GOING ON WITH CULVER CITY PARK PLAYGROUND?

What's with the construction barriers?

Anyone who passes by the Culver City Park Playground is sure to notice a few caution barriers warning kids and adults to stay away from certain areas of the sand box.  Well, it turns out that these are not permanent additions to the climbing selection.  The city has been working on a design for a brand new playground for much of 2009, and the draft playground concept and construction drawings are almost complete.  This item will be coming befoe City Council for approval which is estimated to be in January or February of 2010.  So, fear not!  Soon, there will be new playground equipment sans caution barriers.

FOX HILLS PARK GETS MAKEOVER

   CONGRATULATIONS TO FOX HILLS NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION 

Last weekend the Fox Hills Neighborhood Association (FHNA ) held a Park Pride Day where they created a beautiful corner landscaped planting, painted handrails and painted picnic tables and benches.  The FHNA project was also generously supported by some great community partners; The Westfield Corporation, The Home Depot, Symantec and the City of Culver City PEP Grant projects.

CULVER CITY SKATE PARK IS OPEN!

Construction of the new tubular fence is complete.  The city has re-opened the park weekdays, noon till sunset and weekends, 9:30 - 4:30.  There are still some finishing touches being done, but as far as skaters are concerned it's open for business!
